The law was a sedition law that allowed the government to arrest anyone who spoke out against the government and punish them up to life in jail. This law has been put on suspension while the Indian supreme court reviews the law. They are reviewing the law because they see it to be unconstitutional because freedoms like the freedom of speech and expression are upheld in the Indian constitution. The policy under review in under section 124-A.

This is important because the law will affect a number of Indian citizens that have already been imprisoned due to this law. This law has been used on a number of people including students, writers, and social activists that speak out against the government of India. If India’s government does away with this law then the number of protesters will likely rise in the future due to no concern of them getting jailed for speaking out. This can also be good for India because with citizens having more freedom the people of India will be happier which is good for the government.

This relates to our class because we talked about happiness levels in class and how they were ranked. With India giving its citizens more freedoms it will likely make their people happier because they will be able to speak out freely. This also relates back to the class because we talked about the scale on how authoritarian or democratic a country is. India is labeled as a flawed democracy with it being very close to being a full democracy. With them looking at this law and the possibility of their citizens gaining more freedoms it can move them closer to a full democracy.

Link: https://www.reuters.com/world/india/indias-top-court-puts-colonial-era-sedition-law-hold-review-2022-05-11/ On wednesday May 11, 2022 India’s supreme court announced that they would be reviewing a colonial-era law that has been in effect for over 150 years.
