Following a large investment(29% shareholder) in NDTV, billionaire Gautam Adani has put out a request for an additional 26%, which would make Adani a majority shareholder, which would give Adani significant power within the company as a result of owning, if the request is proceeded with, 55% of the company. Adani stated that it was not a business venture, rather his “responsibility” to own the majority of the company. Adani leading on to say “Independence means if the government has done something wrong, you say its wrong.” This purchase, ironically, is going to result in the censorship of the news, and essentially “will gag the press in the world’s largest democracy” as stated in the opening paragraph of the article. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The billionaire, Adani, with his money has a strong hand in the influence of the Indian National Government and even beyond that, Adani being the richest man in Asia. Adani, friends with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who with India under his government, has gotten the rank of 150 out of 180 in freedom of press(survey by Reporters Without Borders<\/em>). For the recent years, freedom of press has been strict, reporters and journalists who critic the government are most of the time threatened, harassed, or arrested as a result of censorship. Connecting this to the rest of the world, NDTV is by a solid margin, India’s only news outlet that is critical of the government, constantly in the danger zone with the only thing keeping them all from prison or unemployment is the popularity of the outlet. With this move, India is signalling a more controlling, less democratic style of governing. In the eyes of the west, India becoming more like Russia, is a threat to the possibility India sides with Russia in the future, as presently they are still providing themselves as “Neutral” or “Independent”. The U.S, and NATO countries have been eying India, as for NATO to completely box in China, and Russia, India will need to be on team NATO. This event raises even more awareness to the increasingly less democratic aspects of India, as more buddy-buddy deals occur between India and Russia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting this event to class, geographic politics has been the style of decisions from NATO officials during the past years, Russia annexing the Crimea in 2014, and now the invasion of the nation. To box in Russia, China, and North Korea has made several allies and partners in Asia. NATO ties with Japan deepen every year, US-South Korea relations are optimal, NATO has been trying to get India on team NATO, Turkey holds the Bosporus Strait, and the Dardanelles strait, Turkey being NATO’s major middle eastern connection. As the Ukraine War continues to roll out, India especially will need to make a big decision depending on how Russia goes out, from a NATO perspective, hopefully converting to more NATO ideals, and then eventually possibly joining NATO in the far future. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
