In 1980 when Russia pulled out of Afghanistan the Mujahideen was left stranded by the US, slowly the Taliban gained control of the country through a civil war that occurred in 1990. The Taliban has been the perpetrators of countless terrorist attack. Peshawar is less than 20 miles away from the Afghan border and has recently become a target of numerous terrorist attacks from the Pakistani Taliban. Since the departure of the US from Afghanistan the Taliban have been emboldened to attack, a recent attack at a Mosque in Pakistan killed about 100 people and injured 225 more.

Many saw the US pulling out of Afghanistan as an absolute necessity for the country, this has shown how our country has progressively shifted from a liberal hegemonic viewpoint to a more offshore balancing or isolationist perspective. This makes our population more happy and may even approve others perspective abroad but the consequences it has had on the world can be seen very clearly. For example Afghanistan has been overtaken by the Taliban and the terrorist organization has been emboldened causing violence in the Middle East and Central Asia, which we see in Peshawar.

Recently in class we have discussed the UN and its peacekeeping missions. As America turns away from pursuing liberal hegemony an organization like the UN may need to pick up where it left off, the issue with this is the UN requires a lot of precautions to enter any region, often they need the express permission of the country, which requires their trust, many countries do not trust the UN. This is why the UN is significantly less effective compared to a country like the USA who has less precautions in place to go into a country or region.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/peshawar-ap-pakistan-afghanistan-central-asia-b2273335.html Peshawar is one of the oldest cities in Asia, known for the pear and pomegranate trees surrounding the city, historically the city has acted as a gate from South Asia and Central Asia, which makes it important for both trade and security.
