This death toll comes out just as representatives from the warring parties have begun talks in Saudi Arabia. Over 5 thousand have been wounded due to the fighting and civilian casualties have reached an estimated 500 deaths. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and the rival military group called the rapid Support Forces or RSF under Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo have been waging war over the past month turning the cities into battlefields and displacing over nearly a million people.

It can be seen that the fighting is fierce and is having profound impacts on the Sudan people, regardless of which sides is victorious if any, the impacts on the country will have long lasting affects and greatly hamper national growth and increase in power. It appears the militaries are choosing to fight over the urban centers which would give them control over key infrastructure but the cost of damage to said infrastructure and large numbers of civilian casualties.

It goes against a nations general national interest to wage war with itself unless the states perceived national interest are not the same between different groups. The two generals hope to gain control over the nation and pursue their own interests. The issue with authoritarian nations is that the individual leaders interests can often take precedence over the states actual national interests and hurt the nations ability to consolidate and grow in power and economic influence.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/sudan-death-toll-un-fighting-khartoum-de76a27db2d1f871430142d172829f6f The conflict in Sudan has had an increasingly high death toll over time. with casualties rising to 604 civilians included.
