There have been recent updates on the tension between Canada and India since Modi\u2019s statement to Trudeau earlier in the week about Canada needing to take action against Sikh protests in Canada at the G20 summit. Trudeau released a statement Monday that the Canadian government was currently looking into allegations that India was connected to the assassination of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who was wanted by Indian authorities for possible ties to terrorism. At the time of his assassination, Nijjar was working with an organization called Sikhs For Justice to promote the independence of Khalistan.  Canada also decided to expel an Indian diplomat after the statement was released. India responded to Trudeau\u2019s statement that evening, calling the accusations absurd. On Tuesday, India expelled a Canadian diplomat, claiming that Canada was interfering in India\u2019s internal affairs and leaving conflicts at an all-time high between the two countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada\u2019s trade mission with India was canceled after the G20 summit and now with the recent statements and the expelling of two diplomats, it\u2019s clear that Canada and India are nowhere near resolution. I think India specifically had a problem with the Sikh movement in Canada because of the high population there (more than 770,00). However, the United Kingdom also has a high Sikh population but India probably hasn\u2019t been as demanding because they\u2019re in the midst of a free trade deal proposal. India and Canada\u2019s economies both lost the potential to flourish with the business deals between them because of Canada\u2019s businesses in the transportation and clean energy industry. Canada also most likely won\u2019t be doing anything about the Sikh protesters now and will continue to let them fight for Kurdistan’s independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s accusation that Canada was interfering in their internal affairs goes back to talks after the World Wars and even to the Peace of Westphalia where countries met and talked about the importance of nations having sovereignty and diplomacy towards each other to avoid conflict so India saying that Canada isn\u2019t respecting that is a very bold claim. The Sikhs are also a good example of how the three branches of international relations can go together. For example, the Sikh independence movement is illegal in  India so they go elsewhere which can affect international security, especially with the recent assassination of Nijjar and Canada wanting to protect its citizens. The confrontation between India and Canada has also affected the international political economy by missing out on a trade deal that would have been very beneficial for both countries. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
