The Afghan embassy had told India’s ministry on October 1st that they planned to close down. Their cited reasoning for the closure was because of Kabul’s government not being recognized and an insufficient amount of diplomatic support in India. The Afghan ambassador has also been absent from the embassy recently and several diplomats have left. However, the embassy is still operating and is continuing to provide emergency services and support to Afghan nationals. The Afghan Embassy is run by the previous government of Ashraf Ghani as India does not currently recognize the Taliban government. India currently has no diplomatic presence in Kabul but sent a team of officials to the embassy in June.

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi not closing down is beneficial for India because of the large Afghan refugee population, making up one-third of the estimated 40,000 refugees residing in India. The embassy provides emergency consular services to Afghan nationals and could have negatively affected many people if it were to shut down. It appears that there was some miscommunication between the embassy which said they were shutting down and India which stated that the embassy was still functioning normally. Agreements between India and the Afghan embassy could have also been made as a result of the embassy’s original statement. There is still a chance the Afghan embassy may shut down eventually due to India’s insufficient diplomatic support according to the embassy. India has had issues with Afghanistan due to their decision to not recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s official leader until the UN does. Since the embassy is currently representing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which is no longer in power, then the embassy may run into problems in the future.

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi talking about shutting down relates to class because it illustrates how power changes within a country can have a global impact, specifically affecting another country’s diplomats and embassies. The situation with the Taliban and the United States deciding to pull out of Afghanistan relates to the concept of a country’s involvement in another country to work towards the collective good overshadowing their individual interests so the United States had to make the choice to prioritize themselves and their interests. The Taliban not being an officially recognized government by the UN also plays an important role because their lack of recognition has influenced India’s dealings with Afghanistan significantly considering that the Islamic Republic is running the embassy instead of the Taliban.

Link: https://apnews.com/article/india-afghan-embassy-open-e1a4c59cd7e7dfff0ad08397b2b899fc India’s foreign ministry released a statement confirming that the Afghan embassy in New Delhi was still functioning and was no longer going to suspend operations.
