On November 4, 1979, Iran stormed the US embassy and now on the Iranian calendar that is a holiday celebrated as “Students Day and the National Day of Fighting Global Arrogance.” The people involved in the marches were seen burning Israeli, US, and United Kingdom flags, and there were Israeli and American flags on the ground to be walked over. Furthermore these people are claiming that they will uphold their promise of completely eliminating Israel as a country by 2040. Iranian officials are calling for an immediate stop of Israeli bombings and operations in Gaza, which have cause the death of about 9,500 Palestinians, while the attacks by Hamas only killed about 1,400 Israelis.

Analysis – This show of disrespect and emotion that Iran has towards Israel and the United States shows how problematic this war can be if it continues. Countries everywhere feel some type of way about the war and many of the opinions are very strong like those of Iran, and if the war continues for a long time this could escalate to a much more vast scale than Israel vs. Palestine. We could be looking at a war across oceans involving multiple continents, a third world war, and the most destructive war in a long time. Burning and walking on flags is a huge show of disrespect, and in this case it is purposefully public. Iranians want to be seen doing what they’re doing and they want Israel to pull out of Palestine, so they are doing what they can to get the attention of those around the world and try to be heard.

Connection to class – In class we recently talked about the idea of national interest, and that relates to this directly. Iran being a widely muslim country, they will want to support other muslim areas, Palestine being one of them. If nobody in the country cared or had connections to Palestine, Iran would just try to stay out of this or support Israel, but seeing as the countries have similar traits, Iran chooses to support Palestine and their beliefs.

Link to the article – https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/4/iran-holds-rallies-to-support-gaza-mark-us-embassy-takeover-in-1979 Summary – Iran has held demonstrations to denounce Israel and the United States.
