Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack. Attacks on Baluchistan province worries western allies about the election. Voters already disillusioned by political feuding and “seemingly intractable economic crisis.” Violence before elections is common in Pakistan, thousands of police are deployed following the influx of attacks. The first attack killed at least 17 and injured more than 20 at independent candidate Asfandyar Khan’s election office. Another bombing kills 23 and wounds 8 at leading radical Islamist party in Qilla Saifullah. Achakzai, provincial government spokesperson, announced a three-day mourning period, also stating that “the elections will take place on Thursday as per the schedule, and we urge people to exercise their right to vote to defeat those who wanted a delay in the elections.”

The routine reoccurrence of politically motivated bombings without any alleged preventative measures being taken is surprising, to say the least. According to the article, thousands of police are deployed after the influx of attacks. Though police numbers surely increase around election time, more action should be taken to ensure that such deadly bombings cannot happen again, let alone so routinely. Bombings with such high and consistent fatalities should wager more attention than they’re getting, and the candidate that gets elected should give them exactly that. Attacks of this magnitude should warrant a robust response.

The attacks on the political offices are security threats which should be dealt with differently depending on the source of the attacks. The perpetrators are currently unknown, and for this reason, a more robust response on Pakistan’s behalf becomes harder to integrate without knowing if the source of the security threat is internal or external. In the case of the perpetrators residing within the state, preventative measures don’t have to involve outside states, but if the threat is external, a vastly different response needs to be made. If the threat comes from outside Pakistan, the question of whether a rival state is funding the group needs to be considered, along with the potential tightening or crackdown on borders.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/pakistan-bombing-baluchistan-killed-election-471783e425dcfc0e63c235da23c52a73?utm_source=copy&utm_medium=share Bombing kills at least 29 and injures more than 2 dozen at two different political offices in Southern Pakistan the day before parliamentary elections.
