Thousands of farmers began a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march towards the capital in protest but were stopped with water cannons and tear gas by security forces. Farmers declare “mega programmes” across India to press their demands. A “Black Day” is declared by the protesting farmers, which will include a tractor rally and a public meeting of farmers on March 14. Black flags flown from tractors and trolleys along with black cloth worn on turbans are used as symbols in support of the protest. Effigies of Home (interior) Minister Amit Shah and the chief minister of Haryana state were burned to protest alleged police brutality, along with chanting slogans demanding minimum prices for their crops. The death of a protester caused the farmers to halt their march, blaming their death on police aggression.

Farmers are critical to any state, since feeding the state is kind of important. Crises like the one happening with Indian farmers can be avoided by setting minimum prices for crops or implementing subsidies. The US offers subsidies to staple crops to encourage farmers to grow them, which not only keeps the farmers afloat financially in the event of a bad harvest, but also keeps prices reasonable at the grocery store. It also has the added benefit of preventing conflicts like the one India has, where farmers are underselling their crops. If farming becomes too financially disadvantageous, nobody will want to become farmers anymore, leaving India in a potential food deficit in the future.

The security issue India is facing is clearly internal, since no outside forces are involved. A sound strategy to amending the security threat would be to appease the farmers. Implement a baseline price for their crops or provide subsidies for certain crops. This allows for the security threat to end without further bloodshed, avoid a potential food/farmer deficit, and has the potential to lessen the resentment between the farmers and the prime ministers, even if its slight. The death of the protester won’t be easily nor quickly forgotten, but continuing to push back against any sort of reform to help farmers would only be digging the hole deeper for the ministers with this conflict.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/india/protesting-indian-farmers-burn-effigies-modi-other-ministers-2024-02-23/ Indian farmers demanding higher prices for their crops protest by burning effigies of prime ministers.
