He said this because he believes that India is imposing heavy tariffs on imports. He then continued to add that if he were to win the upcoming election, he would implement reciprocal tariffs. He then shifted to talking about his upcoming discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a fantastic leader. He brings up the fact that India is very tough when it comes to trade negotiations because they are very sharp people that are at the top of their game, and they use that against us.

The discussion of trade ties between India and the United States is very important because trading imports is so crucial for both countries. Not only is trading imports with India important to us, but Brazil and China are also very important ties that we need to have. While India may be tough, Donald Trump adds that China “is the toughest of all.” I think that it is a good idea to implement reciprocal tariffs in order for India to not be able to continue to abuse trade relations. This might have an effect on the region however because India will not take very fondly to this decision, which will weaken the United States’s ties with them.

As just previously mentioned, one of the ways that the United States could theoretically respond to the high tariffs on US imports is by implementing reciprocal tariffs. In regards to India, one of the ways that they could respond is by arguing that its tariffs are in compliance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and are necessary to protect their industries. In a similar sense, both Brazil and China could also counter-argue against the United States regarding their trade negotiation challenges.

Adding on to the mentioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is that the World Trade Organization is an example of an intergovernmental organization, or IGO for short. The WTO was established in 1995 and deals with global rules of trade between nations, with their aim being to ensure the smooth flow of trade. Because the WTO is an IGO, the World Trade Organization plays a crucial role in settling trade disputes in its member countries. In the case of the trade disputes between the United States and India, the WTO will most likely be involved with the negotiation.

Link to article: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/india-very-big-abuser-of-trade-ties-with-us-says-donald-trump/articleshow/113445179.cms On Tuesday, Donald Trump commented on India calling them a “very big abuser” of trade ties with the US.
