In what is the first direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory, Iran launched more than 120 ballistic missiles, 30 cruise missiles, and 170 drones. The attack began on Saturday, the 29th of September at 8 pm and lasted around 5 hours according to the US government. During what Iran is calling \u201cOperation True Promise\u201d explosions were heard throughout Israel in cities such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The Israeli military has announced that a majority of the missiles were intercepted by allies before reaching Israeli borders. Jordan also intercepted missiles as they were flying through their airspace. The Israeli military also declared a \u201csmall number of hits were identified\u201d, and \u201cminor damage occurred to the infrastructure\u201d of a base in southern Israel. Only a few people were severely injured, with others having minor injuries. These attacks were in response to the suspected Israeli airstrike which killed 7 Iranian nationalists, including military commander Major General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. The Iranian government has announced that if Israel retaliates, Iran’s response would be \u201cmuch larger\u201d. Iran also informed the US government that backing further Israeli retaliation would lead to the targeting of US bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran’s attack on Israel could lead to devastating effects on the region. Israel has already started targeting other neighboring countries and political\/military groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, whose leader was recently killed in an Israeli airstrike. Palestine, another Iranian ally, very recently saw its main political\/military group Hamas\u2019s leader, Yahya Sinwar, killed by an Israeli airstrike as well. Seeing as two major Israeli enemy leaders were recently killed, It is very likely that Israel will focus on Iran next and forcefully retaliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran has already stated that it will not escalate if Israel does not retaliate. On the other hand, Israel is currently in the process of weighing their options and is most likely to respond with an attack on Iran. The US will most likely back Israel with whatever option they choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On an individual analysis level, Netanyahu as the leader of Israel seems to take a very aggressive approach towards relations in the Middle East \/ West & Central Asia. This is seen in his handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict and other countries who support Palestine. The leader of Iran, Ali Hosseini Khamenei, has supported Palestine in the past and will most likely continue support due to both country’s Islamic roots, and common enemy of the United States and Israel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
