This follows the 4 year border standoff between the two Asian powerhouses. They’re diplomacy comes off the back of them both keeping open relations with the Russians after the war in Ukraine started and them not joining the West in their sanctioning and distancing from Russia. These talks are likely the start of a closer relationship between these Asian states due to their similar symbiotic relations with Russian oil production.

The BRICS summit comes as a large win for all members as China and India’s relations have now began to cool down and Russia is more than happy to see this as both of these countries are happy to keep buying oil from them. It is a very large pushback against American dominance in foreign relations showing a coalition can help states stand through American and NATO sanctions relatively unharmed as long as they have the right friends on the world stage. This also reinforces the idea that India is a burdening power in the east that very soon may surpass China entirely in world presence. Their very neutral position is extremely advantageous as they can somewhat exploit American diplomatic good will to benefit from the US hegemony when they need to and still have the diplomatic wiggle room to stay close with US competitors like China and Russia. Even after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US he is able to meet at a table with Russia and China in a way that shows the countries ability to push ahead in the international community.

This connects to the realist theory and to the Guns and Butter simulation as they have taken the most paranoid or neutral approach as they attempt to keep everyone who they deem as a threat at the diplomatic table while also pushing their own countries ambitions forward in a way that allows them to dictate terms to even some of the worlds greatest superpowers because of their intelligent maneuvering around and through political alliances.

article link India and China held their first peaceful talks at the BRICS conference recently as the both agreed to work towards more peaceful and productive relations.
