The Indian Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, reported that “An agreement has been arrived at on patrolling arrangements along the LAC in the India-China border leading to the disengagements and a resolution of the issues that had arisen in 2020”. Both countries were vague in their agreement, with China not commenting, and India not specifying if the agreement would lead to the demilitarization of the range. Since then, they have elaborated in recent interviews, the Indian Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has said that the agreement was “a product of very patient and very persevering diplomacy”

This is an important development from countries on each side, as the LAC created a point of contention for China and India after military skirmishes in 2020, which killed around 25 troops in total. Since then, the LAC has been heavily militarized, with tens of thousands of troops from each side with artillery, tanks, and fighter jets. Top military generals have now announced that there has been “positive signaling” from the diplomatic side, which is great for relations on both sides. This should calm military tension in the Himalayas, as military patrolling will return to normal before the dispute.

Because of good diplomacy and deescalation shown by both countries, I believe that the countries will remain allies, and trade will return to normal. As China is India’s largest trading partner, they almost needed to settle the dispute for their economy to stay stable. I believe the diplomacy will lead to China continuing to support the Indian economy, as well as buying petroleum products from India, one of the country’s largest exports to China.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/21/india-says-it-reached-deal-with-china-on-army-patrols-along-disputed-border Developing in the last few months, conflict has been growing along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which is the border in the Himalayas that divides the two countries.
