This is the first time India’s Modi and China’s Xi have held formal talks in five years. Russias Vladimir Putin has facilitated these formal talks between China and India as the military conflicts along China and Indias shared border has split the two countries politically. Putin also stated that 30 countries hope to or are attempting to join the BRICS summit in the following years. The communique following this annual BRICS Summit calls for less conflict, especially in Israel, but places less stress on Ukraine.

Russias orchestrating of the talks between China and India will strengthen BRICS presentation against the West and the United States. The small regional conflicts between the two countries have really destroyed any political ties the two had. However with a common economical enemy, the United States, and a common ally, Russia, China and India can come to an arrangement to settle these conflicts and move forward on the global stage as allies. The communique shared after the BRICS summit calling for less conflict, conveniently left out the Russian-Ukraine war. Obviously, since Russia hosts this BRICS event, they will have a hand in what gets shared outside of the summit and what is discussed within. And since war is generally seen as a negative occurrence, they want to downplay the conflict within Ukraine.

Both India and China hope to rebuild political ties severed in the past few years over the conflicts in the Ladakh region of the border the two countries share. Russia and the rest of the BRICS summit want to present a unified economical and political front against the West and the U.S. in order to counteract a strong longstanding American presence felt all over the world. The uni-polar system in the world today is rapidly shifting to a multi-polar system in which multiple countries share political and economical dominance such as India, China, and Russia.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/xi-modi-discuss-ukraine-war-with-putin-brics-considers-expansion-2024-10-23/ The BRICS summit in Russia this past week has led to a more friendly relationship between the two largest countries in the world after years of rocky relationships.
