In the past year, Iran has attacked Israel with ballistic missiles twice, once in April and once in October. In terms of regional relations, Iran backs two major terror groups: Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both of which support the breakdown of the Israeli state. As a representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Grossi has the ability to look into and monitor nuclear development in the state of Iran. According to the IAEA, Iran has an immense supply of nuclear materials that can be converted to nuclear weaponry. During his last term, Trump pulled the United States out of a hard-negotiated nuclear deal with Iran. The IAEA plans to hold high level meetings with the Iranian government, as in past years Tehran has slowly pulled away from UN sanctions on the monitoring of their nuclear weapons.

This article is important because it demonstrates the relationship of states and state actors, as shown by Iran, Israel, and the United Nations. Since the formation of the UN, there have been multiple treaties, agreements, and bans on nuclear weapons and testing. Iran’s decisions to hide the progress of their nuclear development could be perceived as dangerous to the global system. In past years, relations between Iran and Israel, and in the region as a whole, have declined immensely since the war in Gaza has broken out. As Iran has continued to support anti-Israeli terrorist groups, they have also created tension between themselves and the US, currently a steady ally of Israel.

I think that this meeting can mutually benefit both the UN and Iran; if the UN can hold a peaceful and constructive meeting with government leaders of the Islamic Republic and confirm that Iran is not in the process of constructing nuclear weapons. This can increase global security and perhaps help to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. The involvement of the IAEA may help to ease the agreement, making it less political and more enticing for Iran to disclose information. Moreover, I think that Iran can benefit from a productive meeting, as it can help to demonstrate association and cooperation with the UN, which improves the state’s reputation as a whole and may earn them credit in the situation currently occurring in the region.

In class, we have done a significant amount of discussion about the security dilemma. The security dilemma is a situation in which a state, desiring to increase their own security, develops weaponry or the strength of their military, which in turn intimidates other states into taking action in terms of their own security, overall making the globe less safe. An example of this was during the Cold War; knowing the US had a nuclear weapon, the Soviets created a bomb, which led the US to make a more improved, more dangerous bomb: the Hydrogen bomb. An arms race is a recurring example of the security dilemma, and seems to be occurring in this situation. Because of building tensions with Israel, Iran is building nuclear weapons and increasing its traditional military operations which results in intimidating Israel and worsening the situation.

Link to article: https://www.timesofisrael.com/un-nuclear-watchdog-chief-heads-for-iran-stresses-need-for-diplomatic-solution/ On November 13, United Nations Nuclear Watchdog Chief Rafael Grossi visited Tehran to discuss Iran’s nuclear program as tensions continue to flare between Iran and Israel.
