An association of editors and rights groups has condemned the decision, calling it a threat to press freedom in the country. The Editors’ Council said the cancellation of accreditations by the interim government headed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus risks “fostering a climate of exerting control, including censorship, over the media.” No reason was given by the department. In a statement, the Editors’ Council said Tuesday that while officials have the right to review any misuse of accreditation cards, they should not take action without providing specific allegations and proof of wrongdoing. In August, Human Rights Watch denounced the arrest of two journalists, and expressed concerns that the justice system was “replicating its abusive and partisan behavior” without following due process and was “merely reversing those targeted.”

This article is very important because it shows how important the press is to keeping transparency of the government in a country, and by extension journalists are to keeping people informed about everything that is happening in a country. I think it’s interesting that no reason was given for why the interim government canceled press accreditations for 167 journalists, and this makes me think that it may have either been a mistake, or that they do not want to reveal any suspicions that they may have had.

This relates to what we have learned in class because of how sometimes countries can view journalists and non governmental organizations as spies or as threats to their country, much like how Russia removed Doctors Without Borders from Russia due to the non governmental organization being aligned with France. Oftentimes non-governmental organizations can be extensions of the states that they come from, and this might be the motivation behind Bangladesh removing these journalists.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/bangladesh-press-accreditations-c6084ebc9dd6cee9c87101961d031f97 Bangladesh’s interim government canceled press accreditations for 167 journalists.
