The killings themselves were one part of the issue, but a lack of responsible and effective Pakistani security dealing with the issue and the rebels is what caused China to step in, effectively criticizing Pakistani security. While China has not stepped in or dealt with the issue officially, there have been negotiations between Pakistan and China on how to reduce the issue as Pakistan has not been doing so on their own. China is pushing for their own security to step in (metaphorically and literally) to deal with the issues of their citizens based in Pakistan who are not protected. This negotiation could mean that China intends to be on Pakistani soil to deal with the issues or joint efforts between Chinese and Pakistani security, either way, China intends to step in and deal with the issue themselves to some capacity. The article mentions that no deal has been struck as of yet, and neither countries have made official statements of this negotiation. I think this says a lot about the straining relations between China and Pakistan, and how this looks pretty bad from the Pakistani side of things. They rely on China economically as it is their closest allied superpower (ignoring the United States in this context,) considering the 60 billion dollar investment from China into the Pakistan-China trade corridor. The failure of Pakistan in dealing with militant rebels in Balochistan, a province in the southwestern part of the country, has led to strained relations with China. When looking at the details of the negotiations from this article, it shows that because China is the larger power Pakistan is dependent on and indebted to, Pakistan doesn’t have much of a say in how China wishes to deal with the issue. It highlights the power dynamic between the two nations, given that one is one of, if not, the largest revisionist power in the international system currently. Additionally, if Chinese security actually sets foot on Pakistani soil, it brings in the issue of Pakistan’s sovereignty being breached. I think Pakistan’s alliance with the United States also comes into play and is at stake if the scenario above does take place. Chinese military/security potentially stepping on Pakistani soil may show that Pakistan and China are becoming closer. It will not look good from the American perspective that Pakistan, a country who they’ve already had issues with in the past, is becoming even closer with the security of one of their main adversaries. Pakistan will have to find a way to broker a deal with China that settles the issue and also maintains their sovereignty. This entire ordeal is an example of the fluidity of alliances we’ve discussed in class. It shows that alliances, the one between China and Pakistan in this case, can become strained and the dynamic between allied powers shifts and flows.

Article: Exclusive: Beijing pushes to join security efforts for citizens in Pakistan, sources say This article outlines the consequences that Pakistan is facing in terms of their relations with China as a result of militant rebels in the country attacking/killing Chinese citizens based in Pakistan.
