Adani Energy Green, an Indian renewable energy company and one of India’s biggest conglomerates, has been accused of fraud and conspiracy by the United States. Adani was hit with similar allegations of wrongdoing 2 years prior by a US investment firm, but analysts believe that the recent charges are far more serious. Last week, an indictment was filed that charged the founder of Adani Energy Green, Gautam Adani, with misleading and duping investors, lying to them about how a huge solar energy project was being funded and supposedly bribing Indian officials to obtain lucrative contracts in a $250 million dollar scheme. These allegations come as Adani Energy Green builds a massive solar energy plant, planning to light up millions of homes, in the Western state of Gujarat. This new indictment is much more challenging, analysts believe, because it comes directly from the U.S. Government rather than a media outlet or smaller company, and has also had international effects, as Kenya broke off a $2.5 billion dollar deal involving airport expansion with Adani following the indictment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article demonstrates the relation between India and the US in terms of business and energy. In addition, it shows how the United States’ actions affect countries across the world, such as Kenya. The United States and India have historically had fairly good relations, but these accusations by the US Government might indicate that tensions between the two countries could be rising, especially with the power transfer of the US Presidency. We have already seen one country, Kenya, react to the allegations by the United States, breaking off a $2.5 billion dollar deal with Adani Energy Green, but it is possible that other countries in the surrounding area, and even smaller countries in India, may impact their business with the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the accusations of fraud and conspiracy have come from the US Government rather than a media outlet or a smaller company, it would seem likely, and logical, that Adani Energy Green would hire some form of defense, such as a lawyer, to protect themselves from the allegations. The company has strongly denied the allegations, but if the US Government continues to pursue their claims, Adani will be forced to respond with something other than a denial. Building on that, it is very possible that the US Government will decide to further pursue their accusations, seeing as there has already been an indictment filed in New York against the founder, Gautam Adani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article relates to the topic of reciprocal behavior, which we have discussed in class. Reciprocal behavior is an idea that “emphasizes how countries communicate, trade, and do business”, which directly correlates to the communication between the United States and India.
