This ethnically diverse region was once all under the same ruler, the USSR. The Soviets didn’t care about the real ethnic borders, they instead drew arbitrary lines on a map. These administrative borders eventually became political borders once these nations became independent. However, there is one border that was never fully demarcated. This was a roughly 150-kilometer section along the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border. The Tajik and Kyrgyz governments didn’t have access to the original maps that defined the border along that region, so there was constant conflict due to the large amount of lakes and other water sources in the area. This conflict culminated in a 2022 border clash in which over 100 people were killed and thousands fled the border regions. However, in June of this year, the Tajik and Kyrgyz governments both announced plans to finally demarcate the border and held a delegation in Batken, a city that straddles the border. They finalized this conference on December 4th. Both nations’ delegates said that the next step that needs to be taken is for the parliaments of each nation to ratify the decision and finalize it in official documents. So while this delegation isn’t final, it is most definitely headed in the right direction.
While the results of this meeting might not be final, it is a definite step in the right direction. This comes as a trend of warming relations between the 5 Central Asian Nations. In past years, Russia has been able to serve as a mediator in any possible conflict. However, since they’ve been tied up in Ukraine they haven’t been able to exert the same level of influence as they once could. The fact that these 2 conflicting nations could come together and solve this issue sets a precedent among Central Asian nations. This precedent might come due to resistance against outside influence. Ever since Russia left the region, other powers like India, and especially China have become increasingly involved in the area. Warming relations between the Central Asian states might help serve as a deterrence to outside influence and prevent China or India from gaining a foothold. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan should both react to this event as a sign of good things to come. Warmer relations between the 2 states would provide a great deal of trade and economic prosperity for both. Each nation’s parliament should ratify these border delimitations as it would put an end to a conflict that has been ongoing for the past 33 years. This event can be tied back into class by tying in the idea of Liberal Theory. This event is an exemplification of Liberal theory due to the peaceful cooperation of both nations. Both of these nations first started discussing border delimitations at a UN conference in 2023. This fact helps demonstrate the importance of the UN and international organizations in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2024\/12\/04\/kyrgyzstan-tajikistan-reach-deal-on-last-contested-central-asian-border_6735154_4.html https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2024\/12\/after-33-years-kyrgyzstan-and-tajikistan-announce-border-agreement Central Asia has only recently gained independence from external influence.
