The Biden administration has imposed new sanctions on 35 different entities and vessels that are apart of a “shadow fleet” that are involved in the illegal trade of Iranian petroleum. The sanctions are apart of the United States response to Iran’s attacks on Israel on October 1st and the Iran’s recent escalations in their nuclear program. The Biden administration hopes that the sanctions that they put in place will block funding for Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and its support for the local terrorists. All US individuals and entities have been prohibited from doing business with any of these sanctions entities and vessels and any of their assets in the US have been frozen. Eight of these sanctioned vessels have been carrying oil, others have been docking ar Russian, Chinese, and other ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article is important because it highlights the effort that the United States has shown to curb Iran’s illicit petroleum trade that is the main source of funding for their nuclear and missiles programs. The sanctions target Iran’s “shadow fleet” and aim to cause as much disruption as possible to prevent Iran from trading and supporting terrorists. They also hold Iran accountable for its illegal actions because of the commitment of the US and the use of financial and diplomatic tools. This article also highlights how the sanctions limited the amount of oil that our enemies can receive such as Russia and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2 main stakeholders involved in this event are the United States government and Iran. The US will continue putting pressure on Iran through additional sanctions and diplomatic measures. They will also most likely work with allies to ensure that the sanctions are enforced and to have stronger “international cooperation” against the illicit activities that Iran is apart of. However Iran will have an opposite response. They will most likely view the US’s sanctions unjust and claim that they are an infringement on its sovereignty. They will most likely use alternate trade routes in an attempt to evade the sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main topic that is discussed in this article is sanctions. A sanction is a strong nation that is taken to make people obey a law or rule, or a punishment given when they do not obey. The United States is punishing Iran for illegally trading oil with its allies and using the profits to help fund their nuclear and weapons programs and to also allow them to support local terrorist. The US is also aiming to curb the capabilities and influence of Iran’s military in the region. Another topic discussed is the Global Energy Market.
