The cause for launching the submarine was due to the strong and growing Chinese presence; Rahul Bedi, India’s defence analyst says that the situation in the Indian Ocean is challenging with the Chinese navy growing “exponentially” which is India’s main rival. Currently India has possession of 16 submarines, however they are expected to conclude a deal for three additional Scorpene submarines to be built in India. These boats are likely to be commissioned by 2031. India has also licensed its very own home constructed aircraft carrier to rival the Chinese’s more substantial navy.

The event is important as it highlights growing tensions among two regional rivals. SImilar to my blog on the SpaDeX mission in India, India is attempting to climb the levels of power and is right now feeling threatened by the Chinese. This shows India attempting to grow their presence as a protector of the sea, even if it is for their own benefit only.

I believe we could likely see a new surge in the presence of the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean regions as they do not want to feel a threat from India. Tensions will rise between the countries and within the region. This article highlights India’s military modernization as well; attempting to build and buy new submarines to counter the Chinese extensive naval presence.

The event clearly dictates hegemonic realism, but more specifically the changing in polarity of the global arena. India pushing back against China’s presence shows how India is ready to make an appearance and step up with some of the world’s other super powers. This move of launching the submarines is a blatant way of throwing themselves into the mix of the world’s greatest superpowers.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/india-navy-submarine-warships-launch-69c138048bb4202a1a409b0b2353a2f4 On Wednesday, January 15, 2024, India’s navy launched a submarine, a destroyer, to protect the Indian Ocean as it is were 95% of India’s trade moves.
