In fact, the Indian prime minister has pushed to have a “fair bilateral trading relationship.”

India has been considering reducing tariffs on more than 30 American products. They have also considered increasing their purchasing of US defence and energy products to prevent high reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States. The country has taken steps to strengthen diplomatic ties with the United States, not limited to but including agreeing to repatriate over 100 illegal Indian immigrants.

The United States is India’s largest destination for exports, any tariffs would hurt their economy dramatically. India’s trade with the United States had been rising in recent years, reaching roughly USD 38 billion just last year, making the US a necessary partner.

These are great first steps to creating an alliance between the global hegemon and a rising regional power. India’s history with the United States is not the perfect grounds for a friendship, but with both countries taking steps towards creating a respectful trading partner it will be a possibility.

Looking forward, this could lead to the India acquiring better defence equipment, giving them a better chance at countering the Chinese string of pearls in the Indian ocean, allowing that area to eventually fall under India’s influence. This would benefit the United States as it would effectively contain China’s influence in the world and would make it easier to choke out the country considering its relationship with India and the United States.

However, if India decides not to drop the tariffs, it will face equal if not higher tariffs in return from the United States. This would be detrimental to the Indian economy while the United States would remain stable. It is unlikely for India to take this course of action, with the knowledge of their dependence on the American consumer. Now if India drops the tariffs and buys United States defence and energy products it will be creating a powerful trading partner and forming a potential ally to help protect them against China as mentioned prior.

In class we are discussing geopolitical strategy and general geopolitics. This article connects to this subject as the United States has interest in the indo-pacific region in means to contain China. India wants a better relationship with the United States because they are an essential trading partner that helps their economy prosper and has allowed them to build a stronger navy to counter China.

Link to Article: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/foreign-trade/india-may-cut-tariffs-on-30-items-imported-from-us-to-prevent-higher-reciprocal-tariffs-nomura/articleshow/118138780.cms?from=mdr India has been called the “tariff king” by President Trump while emphasizing that India needs to buy more American-made security equipment.
