This agreement would highly boost cooperation in trade, technology, connectivity, and defense efforts. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi added, India-EU strategic partnership is natural. Its ocre is trust and shared belief in democratic values.” In addition, the European Commission chief Ursula von Der Leyen added, “the free trade agreement between the EU and India would be the largest deal of this kind anywhere in the world.” This deal is in no coincidence to the potential U.S. tariffs that President Trump claimed he would install, which would hit goods made in the EU with tariffs of 25%. This bilateral agreement has been in talks for years, but relaunched in 2021, with issues of disagreement holding up the negotiation process. The EU is India’s largest trading partner, ahead of both the U.S. and China, this agreement potentially becoming the defining partnership of the century.

The world is ever changing with the shifting of politics and relations, especially trade relationships throughout the world. While Trump’s plan of tariffs are to get what he wants from countries that have seemingly been gaining at the expense of the U.S., these countries are now coming together, finding new reliance and relations rather than continuing strengthened relations with the United States. This agreement between India and the EU is just the beginning of new trade relations. This relationship is not too unexpected, but because of India’s involvement in the rival economic alliance known as the BRICS, this relationships strengthening was surprising to see so soon.

This current and new “trade war” that was fostered by the United States, that led to this fostering of a strengthened relationship between India and the EU, is an example of a non-armed conflict. A non armed conflict is a conflict between states, nations, actors, or other groups that doesn’t involve continental means of warfare and violence, but rather uses other means, such as Trade Wars, Cyberwarfare, boundary disputes, and ect. to oppose each other. This trade relationship will be interesting to see develop as the world continues to shift with new hegemonic powers and power vacuums, whether India’s trade agreement and deals with the EU will continue to foster, or will diminish if there is a further fight for global influence and power economically.

Link to article India and the European Union have agreed to finalize a long-pending free trade agreement by the end of this year.
