On Tuesday, Indian telecom operator Bahiti Airtel stated that the company had signed a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink, which will explore providing US satellite Internet services to customers in India. Musk has always had a goal for Starlink to enter India’s market, however, its entry into India has been greatly delayed because of regulatory challenges as well as security concerns. Airtel, which is India’s second largest telecom operator, has stated that its deal with Starlink is heavily depending on whether the subsidiary of US aerospace company SpaceX is able to receive government approval to begin operating in India. At least 40% of India’s overall population, which stands at 1.4 billion people, still don’t have any access to the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elon Musk Starlink has at least 6900 active satellites which are orbiting Earth as they provide low latency broadband, including areas where the Internet previously has ceased to exist. An obstacle arose last November when India’s telecoms minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, stated that Starlink had yet to comply with security norms. The telecoms minister added that Starlink would receive a license for satellite communications services in India only after the company meets all the requirements. Both parties to the deal are optimistic as they aim to explore how each company can complement and expand the other. Within the agreement, it is stated that both companies will explore offering Starlink equipment at Airtel’s vast retail store network. The companies will use each other’s network infrastructure to enhance coverage across India.
