India’s foreign minister quickly squashed the claim, saying that there have been discussions of trade relations, however no conclusion has been made yet. The minister clearly emphasized that these kinds of agreements must be made by both parties, and that Trump’s claims are completely incorrect, as they have not yet made any kind of real agreement. The US had originally placed a 27% tariff on indian goods as of APril, but discussions between the 2 countries have been attempting to find a middle ground.

I think this is just another incident to add on to the case of Trump’s growing audacity when it comes to speaking out about his actions in office. There have been several times, similar to this, that the president has released false information about what he, other officials, or other actors have been doing, and it’s causing even more tension between the US and countries it has relations with. Opinions aside, this mishap does highlight the importance of clear communications in international relations, and how complex foreign affairs can really be. It also demonstrates how much of an impact just one misspoken sentence can have, and how slip-ups can truly affect one’s relationship with another country.

While I do not think there is any chance of conflict or excess tension from this incident, I do think it is likely that India will use this as leverage in case of a disagreement. Many other international actors see President Trump as unserious or laughable, and, along with his rash decisions to apply tariffs to so many other countries, I think it is very possible that this will be used against the United States in the future. On the other hand, I do think that some kind of agreement will be made between Trump and the Indian minister, and it will hopefully be mutually beneficial to both parties.

This article highlights a few key concepts of what we have learned in class this year. The trade relations between India and the US show international cooperation and liberalism, because both countries agreed to a bilateral trade agreement, which establishes a mutually beneficial trade deal between the two countries. International cooperation is very important to peace in relations between countries, and it assists greatly in creating and maintaining trade relations. The article also exemplifies the struggles that some countries can face when dealing with international relations, and how important it is to make agreements with other similarly powerful actors.

Link to article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq54ggd62w3o Recently, President Trump made a claim that India had offered to remove tariffs from US goods.
