Smotrich, a far-right politician, was welcomed by Indian Minister of Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman. The agreement seeks to increase trade and investment between the two countries, particularly in sectors such as cybersecurity, defence, fintech, and digital payments. Smotrich described the deal as a “strategic step” that would create opportunities for investors and strengthen Israeli exports. India’s Finance Ministry labeled it a “historic milestone” for cooperation in high-tech innovation and infrastructure. However, the timing of this agreement has sparked controversy, as Israel is currently facing international criticism for its ongoing military operations in Gaza, which have drawn accusations of genocide and generated widespread condemnation. Despite this backdrop, the deal underscores India’s willingness to deepen its partnership with Israel, prioritizing economic and strategic interests.

This agreement exemplifies how financial and strategic motives often take precedent over humanitarian ideals. India is seeking to expand its power, specifically in its technology and defense sectors, Israel is a key player in this. India has historically been a defined supporter of Palestine, though that support has shifted dramatically in the past several decades. India’s further cooperation with Israel may risk increased tensions as India’s sale of rockets to Israel last year sparked numerous protests denouncing India’s Israeli defense support. While I don’t think this agreement will lead to any extreme volume of protests, it is likely to further the region’s political divide surrounding the Middle-Eastern war.

For Israel, this deal means increased trade and likely hints at more weapons deals being made between the two countries similar to last year’s. This is a huge motive for Israel, as it seeks to rapidly grow its arsenal amidst its conflict with Palestine. For India, this could mean a few things. While it may gain further access to advanced technology and defense cooperation, it risks backlash from its Arab allies, many of whom are prominent Palestinian supporters. Investing in Israel doesn’t come without consequence. India could face resentment from both internal protests and external organizations protesting its cooperation with Israel. That being said, India feels that the economic advantage this deal holds is greater than its potential repercussions.

While we have not gone very in-depth on many International Relations themes, it’s clear that there are a number of global challenges at play here. This agreement illustrates how countries, India in this case, often must choose between economic development and human rights. India engaging in defense investments with Israel is likely to spark debate over India’s involvement with what is widely regarded as a genocide on both sides of the conflict. Is India’s ultimate gain following this agreement worth getting involved in the Middle Eastern conflict, or will these investments lead India down a path of political turbulence with both its allies and citizens?

Link to the article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/8/israel-india-sign-investment-deal-as-smotrich-welcomed-in-new-delhi On September 8, 2025, Israel and India signed a bilateral investment agreement in New Delhi during the visit of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
