In August 2025, Pakistan’s foreign minister visited Dhaka which was the first high-level visit in over a decade. This visit was meant to rebuild diplomatic ties by establishing contact between Islamabad and Dhaka. The visit came after the 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina whose government was closely aligned with India. With the new political landscape in Dhaka, Pakistan sees an opening to build stronger relations, counterbalance India’s regional influence, and expand trade. On the other hand Bangladesh is interested in diversifying its partnerships before their 2026 elections. Both of these countries benefit with more trade and contact with each other. Despite the deep historical grievances from the war in 1971 and other unresolved issues these countries have the opportunity to reshape South Asia.

This article is important because Pakistan sees an opportunity to weaken India’s dominance over Dhaka with the election of 2026. By interfering, they are able to sway politics and shape Bangladesh into a more Pakistan friendly environment. This can also give Pakistan more power in South Asia making them a more profound country. Getting involved in more trade and economics with Bangladesh benefits Pakistan. Pakistan can reshape trade routes and build up a defence partnership in the region making them more of a power house country. Open ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan can improve South Asia trade and soften tensions between countries. This event can also have a global impact as it may attract inverters looking to get in on the new trade opportunities and generate a boom in production.

India would most likely decline this idea because they prefer having a close relationship with Bangladesh and not sharing their profits. India and Pakistan already have a tense relationship to begin with so including Bangladesh could create a risky environment in South Asia. I see Bangladesh and Pakistan making amends after their tense relationship, due to the 2026 election. India will likely watch Pakistan’s moves very closely as they have strong political and economical ties with Bangladesh. Bangladesh could respond with open arms and let Pakistan in, diversifying foreign policy ties and giving Bangladesh a stronger hand in Asia. However Bangladesh may think this strategy is risky as Pakistan is not seen as trustworthy. Citizens believe this decision is ill-advised because it will likely anger India who is their most trustworthy alli in this situation.

Link to the article:https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/2/why-pakistan-is-rushing-to-mend-fences-with-bangladesh Pakistan is making a major diplomatic push to improve ties with Bangladesh after years of estrangement.
