These protests were primarily the result of grassroots action by members of Gen Z following a social media ban by the government. This sparked outrage among young citizens and was the last straw in addition to their calls for “good governance and economic equality”. Following these protests former Nepalese PM Oli resigned. He was replaced by an interim PM Mrs. Sushila Karki who has pledged to answer calls for anti corruption. She was put into place as interim by a collection of people including Sudan Gurung, the founder of the NGO Hami Nepal (We are Nepal). She also pledged to get the country on its feet as soon as possible with their parliament holding an election on March 5th. This is a necessary election as the previous parliament was dissolved when the protestors burned down the parliamentary building. She has also begun trying to help families who were impacted by the riots pledging 1 million rupees to each family of the 72 protestors who were killed in the protests.

I think this article is very effective at being purely informative. It avoids language with certain connotations that imply a certain opinion on the topic. In terms of the impact of the situation I think that this could be a very positive event in the long term for Nepal, as it is a fresh start that will likely result in people who reflect the wills of citizens being put into power. I think that these protests were probably the result of the significant economic inequality between those of the working and lower class and those of the upper class and how the classes were represented in the government. I am very interested to see how the drastic temporary change in government will impact foreign relations with Nepal.

I think right now the best course of action for the protestors is to wait and see if progress is actually made in the next six months, this is because they got what they wanted which was the leadership gone, so now it’s of little benefit to the protestors to do more. The other stakeholders I would say are the political leaders and I think their best course of action would be to fight to see as much growth as possible in the next six months as now the younger generation has proven they aren’t afraid to fight for what they believe in.

I think that this is an example of how when a state acts against its people, in this case primarily economically, then it can often create that state vs citizen conflict. This event reminds me a lot of the Arab Spring protests though I would argue it was much more effective with much less violence from both the state and the people. This is likely because the Nepalese government was not setup in a way to intentionally oppress its citizens to the extent of some of the countries in the Arab Spring.

aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/14/nepal-pm-seeks-calm-promises-to-meet-protesters-push-to-end-corruption This article is part of coverage on the political situation in Nepal following the violent anti-corruption protests of the past week.
