So far, China has been the central target of the U.S. tariff campaigns. These intense tariffs focused on China’s exports has jeopardized their position as a manufacturing hub. India, as well, has been caught in tariff disputes, particularly with its purchases of Russian oil. Together these countries face significant reduction in their competitive hold on Western markets and create uncertainty in global supply chains. These changes force Beijing and New Deli to reconsider their economic strategies for the future. For China, by diversifying partnerships and securing stable trade they will best offset the recent tariff upset. As for India, protecting their economy will help them avoid possible conflict between the U.S. and China as tariffs intensify. Both countries shared interest in reducing the effects of U.S. tariffs make their collaboration more than symbolic as it becomes an economic necessity. If China and India can successfully keep their relation stable, then together they can expand regional trade, promote alternative supply chains, and strengthen Asia’s bargaining power in global markets. Although, contingent on the success of this partnership, comes the well-being of the U.S.. If this partnership were to succeed, then the power of U.S. tariffs would be diluted, Washington’s Indo-Pacific influence would weaken, and push the world towards a more multipolar economic order. However, failure in this partnership could vastly divide Asia as the U.S. would be able to keep a tighter influence on India and isolate China altogether. In the long-run, this agreement could reshape the balance of global power by demonstrating that large nations can chart their own course outside of U.S. led systems. Ultimately signaling that the U.S. can no longer use economic or diplomatic pressure to ensure the compliance of other countries in the scope of global commerce.
