The protest was held on September 8, against rampant corruption, nepotism and curbs on social media. The protest quickly escalated after security responded with force leaving at least 19 dead and hundreds injured. In response to this, government buildings, offices, and even the Parliament in Kathmandu were attacked. Several government authorities have also stepped down in protest of the violence shown.
UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, responded asking authorities to prevent further escalation and said he was appalled by the unnecessary use of violence against youth protesters. The UN country team in Nepal not only extended condolences to families of the killed, they also urged authorities and law enforcement to ensure that responses to protests and more remain “proportionate and in line with international human rights standards.”
This could have major lasting impacts because the people are still attacking government property and several authorities have stepped down in form of their own protest. This is extremely bad for the government because we can see the government falling apart due to this. This is a major issue, not only for Nepal but it applies to every country. Everywhere we see protests being stopped with unnecessary force and violence. This case, however, hit millions of people because the majority that were at the protest and injured were youths.
I believe the stakeholders involved are dealing with the situation the best way they know how. However, I believe law enforcement should have used different methods instead of using violence against citizens. Also, in response, citizens should not use violence either. They have chosen to fight fire with fire which will only make the situation worse.
This brings up the theme of peace and conflict. Because of the major deaths and protests, the people are rebelling against the government. They are fighting violence with violence leading to major conflict throughout the country. It also goes with the theme of rights and justice. Not only are the people fighting for their human rights, they are also fighting for justice for the children killed and injured during the anti corruption protest.

Link to article: https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/09/1165808 Nepal’s Prime Minister, Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, resigns after a youth led anti corruption protest.
