Intense shootouts left 23 dead. This operation followed raids earlier that week. The military identified the killed militants as “Khawarji”. These militants are allegedly supported by Afghanistan and India. Along with this raid, a roadside bombing killed two police officers and wounded four in that same northwest district. No one claimed responsibility so an investigation has been issued. The Pakistani Taliban and the Afghanistan’s Taliban and this group has since strengthened especially since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. A ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been held since October 19 and border crosses have been shut.

The escalating violence in Pakistan’s northwest highlights persistent security challenges despite ceasefire and border closures with Afghanistan. This threatens a return to sustainable cross-border negotiations. Pakistan’s accusation of getting support from Afghanistan and India raise tensions as it complicates regional stability considering the Taliban’s influence. This sets back counter terrorism efforts and other humanitarian efforts because border closure disrupts transportation. This also affects the economy of both sides of the borders as trade gets disrupted. This is a consequence of historical mistrust between the two countries but, also, reflects collaboration between the Taliban residing in both areas. The Taliban in Pakistan exploits its ungoverned spaces while the Taliban in Afghanistan maintains government rule. However, the ongoing cycle of violence threatens regional security.

Pakistanis view the TTP (Taliban in Pakistan) as a grave national security threat and accuse the Afghan Taliban government of providing them with support, resources, and safe havens. They agree that TTP is an internal security to handle and insist that the government should act swiftly to secure internal tension so as to prevent it from spilling out into cross border terrorism. The Pakistan military conducted the raids as a form of retaliation and an aim to dismantle the TTP. They, also, aim to pressure Afghanistan’s government to cooperate with them. Afghan’s Taliban denies hosting militant groups or supporting the TTP. They view the TTP as an internal issue for Pakistan to address. They accuse Pakistan of violating its territory and falsely accusing them.

This situation highlights the constant tension surrounding state sovereignty because Pakistan asserts its right to self-defense and to counter terrorism within its borders and it demands that the Afghan Taliban respect its sovereignty by not supporting the TTP’s efforts to internally dismantle or takeover the Pakistan government. This also addresses the concepts of power and interdependence. This distribution of power within the Pakistani government is imbalanced as Pakistan possesses superior military to the TTP. However, they are facing threats from the TTP, a non-state actor that would support the regional interdependence between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban.

https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistani-forces-step-raids-afghan-border-killing-23-127700558 Pakistan security forces raided two Pakistani Taliban hideouts in the northwest near the Afghan border.
