Reports of border attacks and militant violence flood the air as the conflict escalates. Pakistan accused Afghan militant grounds and the Pakistani Taliban of operating in close relations with Afghan and from Afghan territory. So, Pakistan carried out airstrikes along eastern Afghanistan. The Afghan Taliban government said that these strikes were violations of sovereignty and increased the conflict and tension even further. Additionally, there have been conflicts that stemmed from bordering crossings regarding the Durand Line. This dispute has been over the disrupting of trade routes. Qatar and Turkey, regional actors, are pushing for ceasefire talks that have been stalled by military conflicts.

This article highlights the instability of southern Asia following the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan. This includes the resurgence of militant groups like the TTP and the underlining implications of unrecognized regimes holding power. This conflict shows how non-state actors can impact relations and disrupt regional security as it spins over into a broader geopolitical context. The increase in border conflicts and violent airstrikes shows the limits of diplomacy and ceasefire efforts. Counterterrorism has its limits when it comes to power and sovereignty especially when there is a lack of mutual trust between countries.

Pakistan’s response is most likely to strengthen border security and increase crackdowns on militant groups while requesting cooperation from counterterrorism groups. Afghanistan’s Taliban government would likely respond by emphasizing their sovereignty and by signalling for mediation from Qatar and Turkey towards ceasefire. The TTP might exploit the tensions and conduct further attacks to shape their narrative and deepen control and influence in Pakistan.

This connects to IB GP concepts of power and interdependence as trader and border control become the core of this conflict. It is also reflected in the cooperation and involvement of mediator states Qatar and Turkey showing the layers of complexity that evolve from complicated state responses and regional instability. Other regional actors like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China could push for dialogue to avoid more conflict, while NGOs might offer humanitarian support and implement measures that reduce tensions.

https://moderndiplomacy.eu/2025/11/25/afghanistan-pakistan-tensions-spike-amid-border-attacks-and-militancy/ This article discusses the tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan towards the end of 2025.
