Their basis consisted of Iran’s failure to submit to an investigation of uranium traces detected at undisclosed locations, which the West says they believe to be a nuclear weapons program that dates back over 20 years; however Iran denies this, insisting its nuclear program is non military. 23 nations on the board voted to report Iran to the security council, while 8 abstained, and 3 opposed, those being Russia, China, and Niger. Iran insists on locking inspectors out of facilities that were hit by the U.S.’s bunker busters, which is grounds for the Security Council to impose penalties, but if they did it would immediately be vetoed by both China and Russia. This renders the Security Councils control over Iran’s nuclear program symbolic.

These developments are significant because it is the first time since 2006 that a nation has been reported to the UN Security Council. This shows that the little trust Iran had gained from nations around the world since 2006 has been eroded. The split vote signifies how powerless the UN is, because the Security Council is compromised with Iran’s allies, so any real punishment can be vetoed. This creates tension between the West and China, Iran, and Russia. Because the referrals weight it previously carried can be negated, it is rendered obsolete, which really defines the UN right now, as it is incapable of maintaining the global order, regulating human rights, protecting the environment, and fulfilling its original purpose, showing reforms are needed. The name, ironically, is also oxymoronic at the moment as there is a rift between the U.S. and its ideological allies and Iran, China, and Russia.

This article highlights Iran’s sovereignty, as Iran keeping the UN out is an exercise of this authority. Foreign nations however, argue that Iran has no such authority, as it signed the nonproliferation treaty. Although this is true, the lack of consequences from a paralyzed United Nations brings questions to the legitimacy of the organization, the null responses from China and Russia’s vetoes chips away at the legitimacy of the UN, strengthen the sovereignty of Iran, as well as question if UN reforms are needed to ensure liberty, human rights, and the other principles the UN was founded to defend.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/un-iran-atomic-watchdog-security-council-607ecdffcd8ef88ddf8f33041e86b720 The IAEA voted to report Iran to the United Nations Security council for the first time in 20 years.
