Some of the attending countries were India, China, Russia, and Iran. The leaders discussed the Middle East conflicts, the war in Ukraine, trade disputes, tariffs, as well as Western sanctions. BRICS members issued a declaration that called for “maximum restraint” in the Middle East and warned against attacks on civilian infrastructure as well as nuclear facilities. BRICS also expressed their opposition to the displacement of Palestinians and called for an end to Israeli violence in Gaza and voiced their support for full UN membership for Palestine. The summit also brought India and China together with Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting India for the first time in 7 years as both countries seek to improve their relations. However the two nations remain divided on certain issues.

The summit gives India an opportunity to strengthen relationships with major powers like China and Russia with a major focus on Chinese relations, as previously mentioned, this summit gives the two nations an opportunity to rebuild a once broken relationship. As there was a major focus on economics during this summit, this may lead to more economic cooperation down the road between BRICS nations. However, the continued internal disagreements might foreshadow some tension and difficulty carrying out any cooperation between nations as not every nation was able to find a middle ground on the topics discussed.

Many of the stakeholders had positive outcomes with the aforementioned China-India relationship building being a positive outcome for both parties. Both nations are undoubtedly hoping to use this as a building block to build a strong relationship, at the minimum a more friendly one than the current relationship. Russia will surely benefit from this increased cooperation between India and China but they also will be grateful that BRICS couldn’t reach an agreement on their position in Ukraine. Iran did receive support through the warnings against attacking civilian infrastructure however BRICS’s declaration for “maximum restraint” did not specifically name the United States or Israel or condemn any current action being carried out by said nations.

This summit is an example of how countries use diplomacy to cooperate on different topics like economics or conflicts. We can see through the India-China relations how diplomacy can help countries that have different interests or have disagreements with each other communicate with one another and attempt to find common ground before escalating a situation to a level that becomes dangerous for their citizens. Diplomacy can also affect how countries respond to international conflicts, we can see this through how BRICS is choosing to respond to the war in Gaza as well in the Middle East. They were able to find a statement that all parties were able to compromise on even if it wasn’t the perfect solution for all parties involved.

Link:https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/9/12/brics-summit-opens-in-new-delhi-amid-wars-global-tensions-tariffs?utm_source=chatgpt.com The BRICS summit opened in New Delhi on September 12, 2026 and brought together leaders from 11 different countries.
