Team Trump is facing up to the fact that Iran is regularly cheating on the Obama administration\u2019s nuclear deal \u2014 even if it\u2019s not yet clear what they\u2019ll do about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran has already violated parts of the agreement,\u201d National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster noted on Fox News Sunday<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re crossing the line at times.\u201d<\/p>\n True, he said, \u201cIran has then corrected\u201d those breaches after being caught. But, he added, \u201cwhat does that tell you about Iranian behavior?\u201d<\/p>\n That is: \u201cThey\u2019re not just walking up to the line,\u201d they\u2019re crossing it in such areas as centrifuge development, ballistic-missile development and enriched-uranium stockpiles.<\/p>\n And, again, that\u2019s just what we know about. Tehran refuses to allow inspection of its military sites by the International Atomic Energy Agency \u2014 and the IAEA refuses to push the issue. In fact, it has actually cut the time inspectors spend on the ground in Iran.<\/p>\n How will Washington respond? President Trump is required to certify Iran\u2019s compliance with the deal every 90 days; the next deadline is Oct. 15. He can literally tear it up, or he can decertify Iran\u2019s compliance while holding off on reinstating sanctions, and let Congress debate it.<\/p>\n Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, by all accounts, is trying hard to save the deal. No surprise \u2014 that\u2019s what diplomats do.
