They include the right to freedom of speech and expression, the right to assemble peaceably and without arms, the right to form associations or unions, the right to move freely throughout the territory of India, the right to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India, and the right to practice any profession or to carry on any occupation trade or business. These freedoms are fairly similar to those listed in the US Constitution. The Indian population is currently questioning whether or not they are truly guaranteed their right to freedom and expression.

Since 2014, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, there has been a steadily increasing amount of internet shutdowns in India. Just this year, there has been 42 shutdowns. These shutdowns typically follow situation of civil unrest. The government states that the internet shutdown is their only way to maintain civil order.

In my opinion, civil unrest and internet connection have a week correlation. Of course, with the plethora of communication options on the internet, disagreements can arise. However, if things are at all like they are in the United States, a majority of people are only confident enough to express their controversial opinions behind the comfort of their screen. If a country-wide internet shutdown were to take place within the United States, their would be an uproar. Many US citizens would feel as if their lifeline has been taken away from them. This is an unlikely event in the US, seeing as our president likes to communicate with the general population via twitter.

While we Americans most likely do not have to worry about internet shutdowns in the near future, thinking about just how frustrating it would be makes it clear to us how the Indian government is, some may say, acting incorrectly and unfairly.

There are six freedoms guaranteed in the Indian constitution.
