Dorsa Derakhshani is a 19 year old from Tehran, capital of Iran and has currently moved in the United States to start competing with the St. Louis University’s chess team This was not the first time the hijab set off ripples in the chess world. In 2016, a United States women’s chess champion, Nazi Paikidze-Barnes, said she would boycott the world championship in Iran in 2017 because religious law would require her to wear a hijab. There has been many banning in other fields like cinema and theater that happened to Iranian women in the past; for example, a well-known talented actress, Golshifte Farahani was banned and couldn’t act in Iranian produced movies after being in American produced movies without hijab.Personally from living in iran and being aware of the laws requiring women to wear hijab in public and growing up, I know that these women along with many others stand for freedom of religion and choice. They just want that freedom that is provided in a lot of countries specially in the U.S and Europe and they are protesting FIDE’s decision not because of Iran’s religion or people, but for the government’s laws that are restricting their rights as a woman. In the article, Dorsa “ just wants to be known for what she does over the board,” which is what women want. To be appreciated and their talents and dedication to be shown. However due to them not having the freedom to represent themselves how they want (like having to wear hijab) makes them look less like themselves and distracts the public from seeing their talent like being a grandmaster champion in chess.

A female chess champion from Iran has joined the United States Chess Federation, after learning that she was officially barred from playing for her homeland because she refused to wear a head scarf.
