Although the military claimed removing Mugabe was not a “coup”, many of the the senior military staff are now being placed in high political offices. Among them is ex- Army General Constantino Chiwenga. Chiwenga is being given the position of co-Vice President along with Kembo Mohadi, a life-long politician. These two men will be the new ruling parties Vice Presidents. Former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was recently given the Presidential office. After reading about Emmerson, it seems that he could possibly be a good choice. Emmerson was a long time ally of Robert Mugabe, but after seeing the corrupt and ruinous state Mugabe’s government was in, he plotted to remove Mugabe. Unfortunately, Emmerson was caught and forced to flee to South Africa on November 6. Was this plot part of the coup? Who knows.Perhaps it was the impetus for the military’s action. I personally believe that Mugabe removed Emmerson just to elevate his wife, Grace, to a better spot on the Presidential ticket. It looks as though Emmerson wants to remove the corruption plaguing the Zimbabwean government, however, the appointment of military generals is concerning to me. A “coup” is when the military forcibly seizes control of the government and takes charge. While President Emmerson isn’t a military man, his Vice Presidents and other cabinet members are. Just as I had feared, I believe these men want the power and nothing else. Mugabe was just a speed bump that needed to be removed in order for them to ascend the political staircase. I am worried yet intrigued to see how this new government will act.

In early November, the Zimbabwean military marched into the capital city of Harare and ousted President Robert Mugabe.
