class=\"el-editorial-source\">Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)<\/cite>The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) is working with Public Health England to investigate two cases of monkeypox diagnosed in the UK this week, in patients who had recently traveled to the west African nation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">The two organizations plan to trace people who had come in contact with the cases to track and prevent further transmission.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">The first case, a Nigeria resident, was diagnosed with the disease in Cornwall<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>last week, whilst the second case, a UK resident ,was reported in Blackpool.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/09\/12\/health\/monkeypox-cases-uk\/index.html\">Monkeypox: First cases of rare infection diagnosed in UK<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The two patients are considered to be unrelated but both had recently visited Nigeria, where it&#8217;s believed they contracted the virus.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--tablet\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--desktop\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Nigeria declared a monkeypox outbreak in September 2017.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Seven people have died of the disease and 262 suspected cases have been recorded since the start of the outbreak and August 2018, according to official figures from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncdc.gov.ng\/news\/152\/re%3A-monkeypox-cases-in-the-united-kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCDC<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ncdc.gov.ng\/news\/152\/re%3A-monkeypox-cases-in-the-united-kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a statement<\/a>, the agency said it was collaborating with state health departments to follow contacts of the patients during their trip.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;We will monitor the contacts they had in Nigeria for two weeks to make sure they haven&#8217;t developed any symptoms or a rash. Monkeypox is not as infectious as many people think but we will followup to make sure we have covered all basis,&#8221; said Chikwe Ihekweazu, NCDC director.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/21\/health\/zoonotic-infectious-diseases-prediction\/index.html\">Where in the world will the next emerging disease appear?<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">PHE said it was<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/09\/12\/health\/monkeypox-cases-uk\/index.html\">\u00a0tracing individuals, including health care workers,\u00a0<\/a>who may have come in contact with the patients in the UK for health information and advice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Ihekweazu said Nigeria will not issue a monkeypox travel advisory as there was &#8220;minimal risk of people contracting the disease,&#8221; which he said does not spread easily between humans.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;Anyone traveling in the world is at risk of contracting an infectious disease. But we will advise on basic precautions such as avoiding contact to wild animals and if they have to they should take the necessary hygiene precautions,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that typically only leads to mild illness and does not spread easily between people, according to Public Health England. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and rash.
