Once he came to power he promised to end corruption and help the economy. What he also has being doing is what reports are calling a “morality crusade”. He has been establishing more ways to discriminate against the LGBT community and women. In a country where homosexuality is already illegal they are making even more rules against it. If a person has knowledge of someone’s homosexuality and fails to report it to the authorities that said person can end up with 30 years in jail. There are 34 countries in Africa that has made homosexuality illegal, but Tanzania is slightly different. Paul Makonda, the governor of Dar es-Salaam, which is a district in Tanzania, just enforced a surveillance task team to go and “hunt” for gay people in Dar es-Salaam. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, spoke out against this injustice. She said the LGBT community has already faced discrimination and harassment in past years, but it is turning into a witch hunt. She believes these new laws and actions are only going to instill more violence against the LGBT community. Surprisingly though the country of Tanzania had a report saying they don’t agree with Makonda and he is just speaking his personal views. Tanzania’s less “harsh” views still landed them in hot water. Since 1961, Tanzania has had a law stating that no pregnant women and girls can attend school. The law has never been strict, but since Magufuli he has established that he wants it’s full effect again. He has said that one a woman becomes pregnant she is “done”. FEMNET, African Women’s Development and Communication Network, has expressed their anger. They feel that all their hard work trying to get women more rights in Africa is being tarnished. After these events the World Bank withdrew their plan of loaning Tanzania $300 million. This money was money that Washington-Lender put together for the country’s education program.

Since 2015 the President of Tanzania, John Magufuli.
