In Narok, Kenya girls will be examined at local health facilities as they return to school this week. Girls that are found to have undergone FGM, which was criminalized in Kenya in 2011, will be required to give a police statement and those who are pregnant will be asked to identify the father. Narok county has the highest teen pregnancy rates in Kenya but campaigners warn that the tests will lead to humiliation and risk further victimising girls who have gone through this abuse, as well as are unlikely to improve prosecution rates for FGM.

In Mali, armed men dressed as traditional Donzo hunters raided the village of Koulogon in the central Mopti region, killing 37 Fulani civilians including children. Tensions between Fulani and rival communities has turned violent in the past years and has created an alarming security situation in the semi-arid and desert regions of Mali. These regions are used as a base by jihadist groups that have ties to al-Qaida and Islamic State. Trouble in Mali has arised ever since loosely allied Islamists and Tuareg rebels overthrew its north but were pushed back. They have since managed to regain enough power in the north and center to use ethnic rivalries as a strategy to gain new members.

In Kampala, Uganda a plane carrying 139 passengers skidded off the runway when attempting to land. The plane was coming from Ethiopia’s busy capital, Addis Ababa. All passengers and crew were disembarked safely but the incident lead to problems with other incoming flights that day.

In Gabon, two soldiers suspected of an attempted coup have been killed and eight officers have been arrested. The suspects raided the state radio and television headquarters early Monday morning, taking journalists and staff hostage. They read a statement saying they had taken control of the Central African nation in order to restore democracy in the country as well as stating their dissatisfaction with President Ali Bongo. As forces rushed in to save the hostages and stop the take over, two officers were killed. The rest were found either at the radio station or in a nearby building. Gabon government says the situation is under control and believes the coup was plotted by a group of troublemaker because the military wasn’t aware of this group.

Kenya plans to subject schoolgirls to mandatory tests for female genital mutilation and pregnancy, which campaigners are declaring are a violation of victims’ privacy.
