To avoid unnecessary harm to native and foreign travelers, passengers have been advised not to come to the airport until the strike can be successfully suppressed. The police have gone as far as firing tear gas at the workers in the terminals and arresting union members that incited the workers to strike in the first place. Unfortunately, the tear gas has harmed some passengers severely enough to require medical treatment. Although I agree that force must be used to put an end to the strike, the use of tear gas is completely unnecessary and a danger to travelers who are still present in the airport. These actions will also cause the airport to develop a bad reputation and risk a decline in the number of passengers they receive on a daily basis, which could severely hurt them financially. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The workers have decided to strike because they are angry about Kenya Airways taking over the position currently controlled by the state-run Kenyan Airport Authority (KAA). They also fear that this merge in companies will result in significant job loss. Transport Minister James Macharia, however, says that the workers should not worry as he assures them that they will not lose their jobs. He also mentions to journalists that flights will continue very soon. Hopefully it will not take too much longer to solve the situation because the airport is losing income with each passing day. I also question whether the strikes will keep occuring or some the workers will end up quitting their jobs out of their anger for the merging of companies. On the other hand, resignation is probably unlikely based on the fact that there is not many other job opportunities in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
At the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, an illegal labor strike encouraged by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union has caused flights to be grounded and riot police to respond to the situation.
