The Ethiopian Airlines pilot whose jet crashed killing 157 people had reported flight-control problems, Ethiopian Airlines said this Wednesday. The company is prepared to send the black boxes to Europe from a disaster that has rocked the global airline industry, and specifically the Ethiopian airline industry. The plane that crashed was a Boeing 737 MAX. The reason this headline and article is making such big news is because just five months ago the same model, a Boeing 737 MAX, crashed killing 189 people. While these crashes are not directly linked, and they do not know fully why these planes went down, the technology that is under investigation is the automated anti-stall system. The automated anti-stall system is the part of the plane that controls the dipping down of the nose when it is in use. This part of the plane was said to have caused problems for steering for the pilots who were flying the planes at the time of the crash. Because two of these planes have gone down in the past 5 months, around the world these models have been grounded. President Trump of the United States, even grounded this plane model. All these grounds of this model have caused Boeing’s stock to plummet 11.15% since the crash. The fact that Boeing’s stock is falling this fast must be devastating to the Ethiopian economy. I believe Ethiopia is a relatively poor country, and I’m sure the airline industry is one of the only industries that help Ethiopia’s economy. I feel that not only is this going to have devastating problems for the airline industry, but this is also going to devastate Ethiopia’s economy as a whole. I fear that the effects of this industry will start to be felt all throughout Ethiopia.

My region for this week was Sub Saharan Africa, and an article that caught my eye this week regarded the Ethiopian Airlines.
