The tourist’s name is Kimberly Sue Endicott, and the guide’s name is Jean-Paul Mirenge Remezo, according to the company which they were traveling with.

The kidnapping occurred around 6 or 7 P.M., while the tourist and guide, as well as two other tourists, were on a game drive in the park. The tourists were stopped by a group of gunman and abducted the american woman and the guide. The gunman left the remaining two tourists, who were described by the police as an elderly couple.

Later on, the kidnappers used the American’s phone to demand a $500,000 ransom for the release of the tourist and guide. Currently, the Ugandan police have cut off all exit areas in the park, as well as the border with Congo.

In my opinion, the national park security in the Queen Elizabeth National Park is unprepared for actions such as these and needs to be better equipped and have greater numbers in the park to prevent these situations from happening in the future, as they are going to lose visitors for a period of time due to people fearing being kidnapped. In addition, this is not the first time that this has happened in a Ugandan National Park. In 1999, eight tourists, in which an American couple was a part of, and four Ugandan employees, were killed in a national park south of where Tuesday’s kidnapping occurred.

An american woman was touring one of Uganda’s most popular safari destinations was kidnapped with her local guide on Tuesday even and held for $500,000 in ransom, the authorities said.
