The reporters were detained for 10 hours before being deported and were arrested by Uganda immigration officers, Ms. Evans stated on her social media. We still have not been told why they were deported, Mr Jacob Siminyu, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, yesterday declined to explain why the Canadian journalists were deported. He said “Talk to the government spokesman about the details,” Mr Siminyu said. However, Mr Opondo had tweeted in response to Ms Evans’ tweet that: “Do we really need you to scrutinise our electoral process to qualify as credible? Uganda reserves the right to admit foreign persons, including journalists. Good, stay where you are.” Two heads of the United States and European Union funded non-governmental organisations in Uganda were deported in recent months on accusations of pursuing or supporting an agenda for regime change. Kenyan national Isaac Othieno, who had taken over as the acting head of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, a US-based NGO that engages in advancement of democracy, was deported under unexplained circumstances.

I think before anyone judges who is in the wrong or who is in the right, we need to know why they were deported. To me it is a little weird that they won’t release why they were arrested or deported, and it makes it seem like they’re hiding something in a way. I think this is going to cause some tension between Uganda and Canada. Canada established diplomatic relations with Uganda in 1962 pretty quickly after Uganda’s independence. In Uganda, Canada is represented by the High Commission of Canada in Kenya, in Nairobi, and by an honorary consul in Kampala. In Canada, Uganda maintains a high commission in Ottawa.

https://allafrica.com/stories/202012010802.html Uganda has deported Canadian reporters for CBS news who were in the country covering the 2021 election, including Margaret Evans, Lily Martin and Jean-Francois Bisson, a videographer.
