While they are taking this donation, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga says that they also plan to purchase extra vaccines. The donation and free vaccinations are based on the “humane morals that life should not be for sale.” Zimbabwe has been having a lot of trouble with the pandemic in recent months, especially with the more infectious variant of the disease that has been prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. This news that China will support their distribution of the vaccine will create a huge difference and help to bring the country out of the pandemic.

With the help of China, Zimbabwe will be able to turn this situation around. This article is especially interesting in comparison to my other article I read about the ZCTU and the government’s response to the pandemic in the aspect of social support. Now that China is supporting their expense for the vaccine, the government should be able to put more money into their cash transfers to the working class. It will be interesting to see the domestic reforms that Zimbabwe’s government makes in response to the pandemic now that one of the most important expenses is covered for them. China’s actions in this scenario also make me curious if they are trying to gain allies in Sub-Saharan Africa and what their main goal is by covering this major expense for a country that can not give them very much in return.

China’s actions could be explained from the liberal perspective due to their selfless act to support a country that has much less to offer in return than other countries they could seek to support. Their actions seem to be in the interest of the long term wellbeing of Zimbabwe.

Link to article- https://allafrica.com/stories/202102050229.html China has pledged to donate vaccines to Zimbabwe, making it possible for the country to vaccinate all its citizens for free.
