The latest murder of a person living with albinism was reported on January 27th, 2021. Saidi Futon Dayton body was later earmarked for sale in Zomba. Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has condemned the killing of Saidi Futon Dayton, 27 from Kadewere village in Mangochi district stating, “The Commission restates that all persons with a disability or albinism have the right to enjoy their human rights like all other Malawians. Saidi Futon Dayton, was entitled to enjoy all his human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to personal liberty and security and the right to life.” The Commission has also expressed concern over the lack of conclusion of a number of high profile albinism cases and has requested the Judiciary to move with speed in concluding the cases.

News like this really makes me sad. Killing people just because they’re different than you is not okay, what do you get out of it? Blood on your hands? I will never understand it. The country of Malawi already has enough on it’s plate dealing with Covid-19. Now the murder of people with albinism is coming back and the government doesn’t seem to have a lot of support from courts. Saying that “the courts are yet to conclude several albinism cases that emanated from the previous regime.” This is sad because this shows that the hate towards people with albinism is a fundamental problem that is all around the country.

This goes into the whole “What should and shouldn’t the United States intervene in and why’ subject we have been talking about in International Relations literally all year. While a few deaths towards people with albinism is not going to get on the United States list of ‘things we need to take care of’ it’s sad that the only thing that can be done to stop these murders probably is not going to get done. If the government is in a constant battle with the courts on putting these murders in jail, no one is going to get sent away because the court does not care enough to do anything about it. The government obviously does not have as much power as we would like to think or these judges wouldn’t be judges anymore.

Link to Article: https://allafrica.com/stories/202102030691.html The Killings of people living with albinism is on the rise again in Malawi.
