During questioning, the suspect fell under seizure and unfortunately passed away. These police officers were a part of the Soweto Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit. After the incident, the officers took the remaining suspects back to Lenasia prison cells. The IPID spokesperson, Ndileka Cola, mentioned that the stories of the police officers and those of the remaining suspects differed greatly. They also mentioned that the IPID was never called to the questioning or crime scene, but that they are doing their best to reconstruct and best determine what events unfolded. Overall, the death is heavily pointing towards the fault of the police.

The questionable case of this article is important to both South Africa and general human rights. In many countries, the protection of the accused is considered a human right. This death is a violation against that right, and also raises the controversial topic of torture. These touchy topics are likely to cause an outburst from the public, including those from other countries. Once this matter is fully investigated, it may leave a lasting impact on the region; more preventative actions and precautions may be put in place against the police force that could better prevent violation of the protection of the accused and other human rights.

Relating to international relations, there are two different ways two different types of people would look at the rights of the accused. Relativists believe that there are absolutely no moral principles that apply to all people. They do not believe in set moral values in any culture or historical context. In this case, they may believe that rights of the accused, or rights in general, do not apply in the situation. Universalists, on the other hand, fully believe that there are moral principles that apply to all cultures and people. In their case, all human rights, including those of the accused, apply in this case, and they were violated.

Article Link Monday afternoon, March 1st, eight police officers were arrested for supposedly torturing and killing a suspect that they had in custody for an unregistered firearm.
