The instability has continued since then and increased substantially in December 2020. In December current President Faustin-Archange Touadera was re-elected, sparking multiple disputations from several militias in the country.

In response to the 2013 rebellion, the United Nations started MINUSCA (Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic). This mission sent 450 Gabonese troops to the state in hopes of stabilizing the country. However, now all 450 troops are being sent home after allegations of sexual abuse against five girls. Now the Gabonese Ministry of Defense has opened an investigation on the accused soldiers and according to the Gabonese government, if the allegations are found to be true, the accused will face a military tribunal.

Obviously, this press puts pressure on the Gabonese government and the United Nations to be more accountable considering the soldiers were supposed to be maintaining peace, not disrupting it. However, this isn’t a lone case for the United Nations or the Gabonese military. In 2015 and 2016 there were allegations against the Gabonese peacekeepers and by United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Clearly, this puts the United Nations in a bad light, an organization that already has some negative press and people unsure of its legitimacy. Also, this will further destabilize the Central African Republic as the peacekeepers leaving will leave some power-vacuum within the country, which will either be filled by the Central African government or one of the several active militias within the country. Also, if the Central African Republic falls into the hands of one of these militias the entire region can be extremely vulnerable to instability as several other countries like Guinea and Mali face coups this year.

This is a clear example of different types of global actors: the states (Gabon and Central African Republic), the IGO (United Nations), and other-non state actors (the militias within the Central African Republic). Now, this also shows how the United Nations is a political and military IGO. This clearly shows how the United Nations is a political IGO because the United Nations is a conduit for coordination between two states, Gabon and Central African Republic. Also, this shows how the United Nations is a military IGO because they are forming alliances between Gabon and the Central African Republic, who invited Gabonese soldiers into the country.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/un-removes-gabon-peacekeepers-central-african-republic-after-sex-abuse-2021-09-15/ The Central African Republic, a very resource rich state, has struggled with stability since 2013 when president Francois Bozize was overthrown in a rebellion.
