Over the years, Myanmar attempted to rid itself of hundreds and thousands of Rohingya, pillaging villages, raping women, and murdering the population. The Rohingya, a Muslim-based minority, have fled to Bangladesh and now live in overcrowded refugee camps after the Myanmar government sent it’s military to ‘cleanse’ villages and search for ‘Rohingya armed groups’. Investigators from the UN agree that the act was carried out with genocidal intent. Canada and Netherlands, however, have decided that they will pay for lawsuits concerning the act of rape and sexual assault that Myanmar troops carried out against Rohingya women and children. They have received a rather large amount of applause for this, under the claims that this is a historic step in the right direction concerning the rights of women and children and prosecution for rape crimes.

Here’s the thing. I’m aware that countries shouldn’t involve themselves in all ‘minor’ things, or it would just mean constant conflict and the idea that intervention may not be all that helpful after all. However, I feel like Canada and the Netherlands are doing the bare minimum here. Is it one of the first times this has been done? Yes. But is this also the literal 21st century. All in all, this is a positive thing. Traditionally rape and sexual assault charges in the case of militant abuse of power has gone unchecked. If a women garnered enough resources and protection to not be afraid of speaking out, she would also have to have enough money to pay for a lawsuit. Except, how can she have enough money to pay for a lawsuit, because her home has been pillaged and a lot of the time she’s fled her country. So yes, overall, this is a very good thing.

Gambia claims that Myanmar is violating the ‘the Genocide Convention’, which essentially places the blame of a genocide on the state that it occurs in, due to the willful overlooking by the Government of that state or otherwise the people who inhabit it. Gambia is backed by 57 states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as the UN, and now Canada and the Netherlands. Gambia filed it’s case before the International Court of Justice, which decrees that all member states have a responsibility to prevent and punish genocide. Myanmar is both a state and a member of the ISJ, meaning hopefully, they will serve for their crimes.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/9/3/canada-netherlands-join-gambias-genocide-case-against-myanmar Countries are closing in on Myanmar as it faces prosecution for it’s genocide against the Rohingya, including Canada and the Netherlands.
